From:  John Eldridge – Restoration Year

This truth about how God thinks about us, was life changing for me.  I wish I had understood it sooner in life.

My beloved is mine, and I am his.  SONG OF SOLOMON 2:16 NASB

The sacred romance is a Love Story, but far older and much more reliable than matrimony. Rather it’s the Story of how God has pursued you ever since you were a child. Oh friend, God cares about-even yearns for-the life of your heart. That your heart even matters to God is one of the greatest, most hopeful turns of faith that can come into your life. You are in a process of restoration, at the center of which is a recovery of wholeheartedness.

I believe that sometimes God will invite you back into treasured memories and special places. And if it is by his invitation, you are safe to go there. He takes you back for several reasons— not only for the feast of memories that comes (some of which is needing to be healed), but also to reawaken sleeping places in your heart. Mostly I think he takes you back to show you as an adult all the ways he was wooing you in your childhood, even when you didn’t know him at the time.

To be taken back into the memory of an ice cream shop, to a swing in your backyard, the experience can be almost like a waking dream where you revisit the best days of your childhood.

When you go there with Jesus, you’ll find there is much of the Romance in your story to be reclaimed.

This is a wonderful exercise: Write down a few things from your childhood that were precious memories to you. Ask God to show you how he was “romancing you” at that time.
