I resonate so much with this reading from John Eldridge’s “Restoration Year”…

By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command. HEBREWS 11:3 NLT

Is there a reality that corresponds to the deepest desires of our heart? Who gets the last word—life or death? You need to know, so you are constantly trying to make sense out of your ex-periences. You look for coherence, an assurance that things fit to-gether. The problem is that most of us live our lives like a movie we’ve arrived at twenty minutes late. The action is well under way and we haven’t a clue what’s happening. Who are these people? Who are the good guys and who are the bad guys? What’s going on? You sense that something glorious is taking place, and yet it all seems so random.

No wonder it’s so hard to live from your heart! You find yourself in the middle of a story that is sometimes wonderful, sometimes awful, and you haven’t the slightest clue how to make sense of it all. Worse, you try to interpret the meaning of life with isolated incidents, feelings, and images without reference to the story of which these scenes are merely a part. It can’t be done, so you look for someone to interpret life for you. Your interpreters were probably the primary people in your life when you were young-your parents, grandparents, or another key figure. They shaped your understanding of the story in which you find yourself, and directed the commitments you made to protect your heart.

This is worth a little reflection. Who were your primary “interpreters”? What was the “story” that they gave you? Is it about survival? Getting a happy little life? Pleasing others?
