One of the most difficult times in my life was when the “house of cards” I had built came tumbling down. It felt like life was ending. In reality, a new life was just beginning…
GOD THWARTS YOUR IMPOSTOR (False Self)
(From Restoration Year – John Eldridge)
My dear child, don’t shrug off God’s discipline, but don’t be crushed by it either. It’s the child he loves that he disciplines; the child he embraces, he also corrects. HEBREWS 12:5-6 THE MESSAGE
It is a very dangerous moment when you feel that God is set against everything that has meant life to you. Satan spies his opportunity, and leaps to accuse God in your heart. You see, he says, God is angry, and disappointed in you. If he loved you he would make things smoother. The enemy tempts you back toward control, to recover and rebuild your false self. So you must remember that it is out of love that God thwarts your impostor. As Hebrews reminds you, it is the son whom God disciplines, therefore do not lose heart.
God thwarts you to save you. You think it will destroy you, but the opposite is true-you must be saved from what really will destroy you. If you would walk with him in your journey, you must walk away from your false self and give it up willingly.
If you have no clue as to what your false self may be, a starting point would be to ask those you live with and work with, “What is my effect on you? What am I like to live with (or work with)? What don’t you feel free to bring up with me?”
Do you know what your false self is? Can you name the “fig leaf” you use to keep yourself from being rejected, or to get some praise, or to control your world?
